Composition here is really interesting – without the dog, my eye wanders up and out of the image led by the highlights from the sun breaking through – with the dog I really stay grounded in the image. I’d really like to see a big print of this – I imagine there would be some interesting detail in the dog’s head/face.
Great to see you here. I am working on a new site (www.craigtanner.net) and have begun the challenging task of going through a back log of thousands of gigs of old work, including my commercial “best of work”…. so I will be turning up more images like this. I shot this not long after I got my first digital camera…. the Canon 10D. I had not seen this image in years and when I did it hit me very hard….. made me think about Shadow and all of the other dogs I have lost.
This image was a grab shot on Jekyll island. A stranger was walking his dog and I was shooting landscapes and the dog came up to me and we played a bit and then the dog went for a swim. When he was coming out of the water the light beams broke through the cloud cover and I had time for one shot…. and yes I wish I had more detail in the dog but I exposed for the background. The foreground has already been dramatically lightened…..Craig
Most dogs are so friendly and giving that it is tough when they get called home the final time. This shot really shows that you love dogs Craig! I like the B&W treatment and your image design a lot. I started with the D30 and now shoot with a 20D since my upgrade path dramatically slowed after retirement and my big photo $$$’s dried up :0) I wish the DSLR would have come along fifty years sooner. Good luck with your new site. I’ve been working hard digitizing my thousands of slides and negatives and almost daily I uncover a forgotten gem.

Hey Tim,

This is both heart-rending and uplifting… It makes me think of the movie “Old Yeller”.
Very dramatic lighting with those rays from the sun seeming to be giving the dog help as it makes its way out of the surf.
“made me think about Shadow and all of the other dogs I have lost.”
How about changing that to this: “made me think about Shadow and all of the other dogs I have had the privilege of knowing and loving.”?
Hugs,
Flo
