Beautiful light. Wonderful colors. Love the light on his face and my eye keeps going to that old shirt that looks so great. And the background that could have been distracting but instead adds lovely color and framing. River looks very different here than in other photographs… more open, friendly. Must have been rather dark for such a high ISO and wide open aperture.

This is such an unusual candid portrait, in so many ways, that I’m at something of a loss for words to describe its strong intrigue!

Color, of course. Light, so beautiful along the edges of River’s arms, glancing across his face, and into his eyes. Separation. Abstraction. And above all — or all working together for — the suggestion of beauty and dreams amidst a gritty life.

“The light of life” is a phrase that keeps coming to mind.

Like Phillipe, I was taken aback by how this was extant in what must have been the dark! And that adds yet another layer to the interpretation.
