Beautiful picture..Was a ‘lens baby’ used or was the blurring done with an adjustment layer?..I like the daily critique and workshop, particularly when you mention how you made the layer changes..You are a great teacher and when you mention the tools you use to correct it is a great help..Thank you..
Thank you for leaving the first comment on Light Diary!!! and thank you for your kind words of support!!! I did use a Lens Baby for this shot. Stay tuned for the first Light Diary Podcast, which will be released on May 18th. In each Light Diary Podcast I will be telling the stories behind 2 weeks worth of images (10 images)….Craig
I really like commitment to photography and all the emotions that go with this. Though My website is in beta testing, your work and attitude have inspired me to go for it, regardless or the “message’s in my bottle” tell me.
I just bought some lighting equipment for onsite shooting

Well, I’m not a fan of this picture (don’t know why, but I think it’s just not my type of picture…), but I absolutely like the idea of your light diary, especially that each week you follow a specific theme. Having a red line as a viewer which can be followed when browsing the pictures is great!
All the best to you, Craig. Because of your perspective and instruction throughout the years, I am doing what I most love to do. Thanks again for the very practical information you presented in the architecture workshop. I look forward to your posts on this site.
Couldn’t find the place to register to be on the Light Diary list. Please add my email, and best wishes on this new teaching tool. I look forward to receiving it.
Craig, I look forward to your new ‘project’. Since attending your classes, my photography has taken wings. I can only think this approach will give all of us new ideas to draw from. Thanks for your untiring commitment to the rest of us…
I’m looking forward to this project and am sure that your viewers (myself included) will learn from and be inspired by your efforts. I say this with confidence because of my experience with the Daily Critique and Radiant Vista’s workshops.
Congrtulations, I look forward to your next adventure, here. I would have cropped it square, bird in the middle, to play upon the diagonals in the hand and feathers. Great shot. Best regards, Bob
Craig, congrats on the launch of Light Diary and thanks so much for your continued interest in making us all better photographers and people. My guess is that this was pretty much an on-the-spot grab shot? I’m not a big fan of the lens baby but admit that it gives this image a feeling of action that would otherwise be missing. I would like to see the light area in the upper left corner go away either by darking it or using somewhat of a pano crop. I’m anxious to see and learn more!!
Murry
Craig, Congrats in your new creative endeavor! I will look forward to reading and hearing about the images presented here. With this, your workshops, RV, and your own work… how do you keep up with it all? Your creative ambition never ceases to amaze.
Craig, Im very excited to learn from your light diary. Thank you so much for sharing your view and your creativity. You gave me a lot of ideas and hope to get plenty more. Good luck!

Hi Craig…
This was one of my favorite shots at the workshop I just atteneded last weekend in Boston! (Which I really enjoyed and I am glad I attended. I learned alot.)
This shot generates emotion, the first that comes to my mind is trust. I also love the way the diagonal of the finger is in line with the diagonal of the white stripe on the Chickadee’s face. Split second decision making to take that shot, and to read that you did this with a lens baby! Amazing. Have fun with this site, I know I will be back often and will enjoy your thoughts and vision.
Lisa
Craig, let me add my thanks for Light Diary. What a great idea and I look forward to learning and growing.
I attended the Boston weekend and it was terrific.
Good fortune with Light Diary!
In a perfect world, the lens baby would have realized which end of the bird was more important and focused attention more around the head. But still a lovely picture, getting to the essence of things very directly.
Thank you for all of the feedback! I am extremely grateful and humbled by all of your support!!!
Its great also to get specific feedback on the launch image and I am looking forward to all of your process and composition related suggestions and questions as Light Diary moves forward…..Craig
I will look forward to your themes and comments. You are a magnificent teacher and there are many photographers out there who are better because of studying with you.
Next Steps are really great…..I am ready to put on my boots and walk along with you on your new path. Keep On…. I can’t wait to see your next step….

Great idea looking forward to your new site. Good Luck I also attended the Inspirational Weekend in Boston It was fantastic!!!!!
Really like your shot not sure if I am ready for a Lens Baby
Craig, great job in Boston I really learned a lot.
The Light Diary idea is great not only for you but more so for us in our learning process.
Great picture with the lense baby.
Graig, I had a great time in Boston. I can not beleive all the great ideas you gave us. I have already tried a few. You are truely an ARTIST !!!!! Good luck and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I think Light Diary is a great idea. I tried taking one picture a day and got side tracked. You have inspired me to start again. I loved the picture of you holding the bird. I would have like to have seen your finger behind the bird a little higher or lower. I look forward to your inspirational ideas to help motivate me.
Thank you for sharing Light Diary.
Craig, your new project has caused me to be much more observant to the extent that I can, at color and images. thank you for that. I look forward to improving my skills with your dedication to your profession.
Love the photo, it makes me want to experiment with a Lens Baby. I would like to see the bird’s face a little more in focus but since it’s not a perfect world… Also, how would it look using a circlular crop? Looking forward to more photos and a successful start to your new site! Oh yes, I thoroughly enjoyed your Austin, Texas workshop!! You are an inspiration, don’t stop. Mark
I really like the photo. There are some distractions that I think could help improve this. The ladies left arm with the white sweater. And the gentleman already mentioned the white background at the left upper corner. If these could be cropped and let the hands show the true tenderness with the bird then the expression to me would hold a larger impact. Also, the eyes would not wonder from the sweater to the bird to the left top corner. Your eyes would move from the wrist to the bird by the lines of the fingers. Anyway, Craig good to see this Old Bud. And, I believe you are going to get tons of information. Good Luck and hope to see you soon.
Congratulations on the launch of your new venture!! There is no doubt that you will continue to instruct and inspire on this site, as you have done for so many years in so many different arenas.
I love the feeling of tenderness and interspecies connection portrayed in this shot. Thanks so much for your workshops/weekends and the great reading list included with your Myth of Talent article. I hope to see you in another workshop this summer.
Craig the idea of combining five images with some kind of theme with a podcast and feedback via the web certainly has enormous potential as a teaching tool. I also applaud your use of lightdiary as title for this feedback site and take flight for this launch image – it is good to see someone who enjoys manipulating language without use of software! LOL
I would like to comment on the classification of this image in the light of some forum discussions on RV. IMO this image is not “fine art” but is a “hero image”. Fine art should grow on you – if you shell out the dollars for a mounted print or buy a photo book you hope that each viewing will reveal something more to you from the image. However when publishers are looking for a hero image for a front cover or page they want something which has immediate impact and communicates somethiing about what follows – usually in the written material to follow or inside the book or magazine cover.
Your little bird to me conveys, vulnerability, trust, hope and potential to take flight in the future. Anyone who puts their images on the web is vulnerable. Radiant Vista has built a wonderful culture of trust and the responses to this forum certainly look forward to the future.
I actually agree with some of the previous technical critiques – mounted large and on the wall, this image would not communicate more over the years and we might all become aware of its faults. Where it is it fills the bill indeed. Well done and good luck, I look forward to the podcast.
Wonderful image Craig. Not just the small seemingly helpless bird, but the hands which are holding the bird with a fragility that leads the viewer to believe the person has a warm, kind and gentle heart.
I can’t help but smile when looking at the image. The bird looking directly at the lens conjours up many things the bird MIGHT be thinking!
BEST OF LUCK with Light Diary, Craig, and thankyou for all your help.
Very nice Images, I really like you work. I have been to your workshops before and I think you have a great teaching style Keep up the good work, I can’t wait for more.
Thanks for even more inspiration Craig – all the best with this new teaching tool – I just wish you could visit us here in Australia sometime

Craig, a great start to a new experience for all of us. This image brings out one of my most fearful feelings, that of trust. I wonder how does this small bird end up in the hands of this person? Is it being held there by some means. If I were the bird, I would be full of fear at this point. As I sit here safely at my computer, I can still feel what I think the bird is feeling. Overall, I like the connection between the human and the bird there seems to be a lot of trust established betwen the two. I love this shot.

I have to say I like the shot because I know how hard it is to use the Lens Baby. I really like the idea of the Light Diary!
Can’t wait to see more.
